Water Dispute – Figuig under tension: two activists arrested, the national collective calls for mobilization

The national for supporting the Hirak of the Oasis de Figuig firmly denounces the arrest deemed “arbitrary” of two figures of the social movement: Mohamed El Brahimi, nicknamed “Mofo”, and Redouane. They were arrested because of their “opposition to the drinking water privatization project for the benefit of the Oriental Group company for distribution,” said a , made public this Thursday.

The population of Figuig “struggled for more than a year and a half” against this measure, denouncing a decision taken without citizen consultation, despite the principles of participatory governance inscribed in the Constitution of 2011, the press release said.

Heavy accusations, an imminent

The two activists are prosecuted under several counts:

  • Outrage to public officials (art. 263 of the penal code),
  • Participation in unauthorized demonstration (art. 14 of the dahir on gatherings),
  • Opposition to the execution of works ordered by the authority (art. 308 of the penal code).

They were placed in detention at Bouarfa prison, where their trial is scheduled for Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 1 p.m.

A call for national solidarity

The collective calls for all political, union, associative, and youth forces to:

  • require the immediate release of prisoners,
  • organize solidarity actions in support of the Hirak of Figuig,
  • denounce the attacks on the to demonstrate peacefully and freedom of expression.

In addition, the press release welcomes “the courage and tenacity” of the inhabitants, who continue to defend their right to citizen participation and the management of their local water resources, despite increasing pressures.
