Many visitors to the Moroccan capital have recently complained about the quality of taxi services, denouncing the fraudulent practices of certain drivers who refuse to activate the counter, impose exorbitant prices, or refuse without reason to bring them to their destination. The drivers covering areas such as the medina, Rabat-Salé airport, or the surroundings of large hotels, are those who engage in these bad practices, in violation of the rules that govern the sector.
Several tourists and visitors have entrusted to Al Akhbar Having been victims of abuse on the part of Rabat taxi drivers who consider them simple “fast gain opportunities”. The resurgence of abuse complaints concerns consumer protection associations which denounce the laxity of the authorities in the face of this situation. According to data reported by these associations, these complaints increased by 40 % in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Even if local authorities continue to carry out unexpected control operations, the sector’s regulation remains a major challenge to be met with regard to the size of the taxi park and the absence of structured transport alternatives, notes the daily. For their part, professionals explain that this situation is due, not to the greed and avidity of certain drivers, but rather to an inorganization of the sector which makes taxis essential for visitors.
Professionals also denounce the absence of dissuasive sanctions against drivers who spill tourists, stressing that these practices harm the image and attractiveness of the kingdom which works to position themselves as an essential global tourist destination.
