Newcastle disease is a very contagious viral infection that mainly affects domestic poultry and certain species of wild birds. Caused by avian paramyxovirus, a virus from the paramyxoviridal family, it manifests itself in acute respiratory disorders, nervous disorders, severe diarrhea and a brutal fall in egg production. Although human transmission remains rare, the virus can cause benign conjunctivitis in people who have been in direct contact with infected animals.
