The Spanish Foreign minister calls for the summons of a new European Union Council to rekindle bilateral relations, put to the test by the highly disputed judgments of the EU Council on the Sahara.
Spain expressed, Thursday, April 17, its desire to revive the links uniting the Morocco to theEuropean Union (EU), after the European Union Court of Justice (TJEU) confirmed, in October 2024, in a controversial decision, the cancellation of trade agreements allowing the export of products from the Moroccan southern provinces around twenty-seven member states.
Since the association agreement signed in 1996, Morocco has been considered a reference partner For the EU, especially in the agricultural and fishery field. In March 2022, Spain publicly supported the Moroccan autonomy plan. France followed suit in July 2024, causing the ire of Algiers, support from the Polisario Front.
-A judicial decision with political consequences
The CJEU decision has weakened the commercial mechanisms linking Morocco to the EU with regard to products from the Sahara. In fact, it has introduced uncertainty about the sustainability of trade and political relations between Rabat and Brussels.
Questioned in Madrid after a joint press conference with Nasser BouritaMoroccan Minister for Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares Bueno reaffirmed the importance of a structured dialogue with Morocco. “Spain wishes to hold as soon as possible of a European Morocco – European Union council capable of instilling new impetus in this strategic association”he said.
The minister also highlighted the reciprocal benefits of “Advanced status” granted to Morocco in its relations with the Community Bloc, believing that the common challenges require in -depth and lasting cooperation, freed cyclical blockages.
