If we go back almost six months back, George Russell completed his third season in the Mercedes stable in Abu Dhabi since fifth place when the Grand Prix arrived. Overwhelmed by Lewis Hamilton in the last sector of the last round of the circuit, the Briton contributed in spite of himself to post the last big image of the seven -time world champion aboard one of the two silver arrows.
However, the former Williams pilot was slightly more constant over the whole season. Sixth in the world pilot championship in 2024, George Russell surpassed his teammate by 22 points, and was just behind the two Ferrari, the two McLaren, world champions of manufacturers, and Max Verstappen, leader in the pilot ranking.
Winning twice in Austria and Las Vegas, the Mercedes pilot n ° 63 could even have gleaned a third success in Spa-Francorchamps without a disqualification suffered because of a weighed car below the minimal weight on arrival. Despite these few shines, the interested party did not enjoy thunderous results aboard his Mercedes W15. Thanks to a more efficient machine in 2025, this promising weekend carpet allowed almost desperate flowering for the champions eccaps between 2014 and 2021.
Russell equals his successes of 2024
On the whole of last season, George Russell had mounted on four podiums in 24 occurrences, counting in passing three successes since his arrival at Mercedes. While 2025 is just beginning, the new leader of the silver arrows is already on the way to completing a much better year, and this on all floors. In six races completed until then after the Miami test, the Briton has already equaled his total from last year with four presences on the podium, in 2/3 of the cases.
-At this stage, however little advanced of the season, Russell only missed the top 3 twice. In Suzuka and Djeddah, in almost opposite conditions, Kimi Antonelli’s teammate finished in fifth place. Result more than honorable in a context where his car seems to have difficulty being competitive in the long term behind the head of head regularly in verve.
The W16 more permissive than the previous generations of Mercedes
Despite some issues related to electronics, notably encountered in Bahrain in the last laps, the W16 version of the Mercedes is the source of a better understanding on the part of the team. George Russell landed in a team in total reconstruction and appears for the first time able to hope for a series of good results with his team.
More balanced, capable of adapting to very many track conditions, his car nevertheless suffers from a form of overheating at the tire level preventing him from aiming even higher. Like the thirty seconds of delay accumulated during the Miami Grand Prix on the head duo, George Russell admitted that he was not able to challenge the pace of McLaren. In this context, the podiums will have to be maximized for the British, hoping that his stable finds a solution by summer, or that the 2026 season makes it possible to bring mecedes back to the top, as in the last decade.
