Present alongside Max Verstappen at a press conference today in Djeddah, Fernando Alonso also responded to speculation and in particular the rumor which sees Verstappen taking its place at Aston Martin F1 in 2026.
“I do not think, because I have a contract for next year. But I understand rumors, it’s very good for the team. The world champion is sometimes mentioned in other teams, especially for a possible departure from Red Bull, and the stables mentioned are Mercedes, Aston Martin and Ferrari.”
“And that illustrates the project in which we are in and the future of this team. As I have always said, when I extended my contract, I promised to pilot as long as I feel fast.”
-“But my contract is much longer than my pilot career. So I will stay in this team for many years, in another position.”
“And if that means that we can win a world championship, even without being a pilot, I will always be very proud of the project.”
Asked about his acceptance of a possible duo with Verstappen, in case Lance Stroll leaves his place, Alonso concluded: “Yes, but it’s unlikely. Very unlikely.”
