The latest Google Maps update on iOS solves a daily problem: the application can now scan your screenshots to automatically detect places and offer you to save them, without any manual research.
Google has just deployed a new feature for iPhone users that could radically change the way we save the places discovered online or received by message.
The MAPS application is now able to scan the screenshots of your smartphone and automatically identify the places mentioned there to save them in your lists.
A solution to a daily problem
This development, initially announced in March and now available for all iOS users, responds to very common behavior: taking screenshots of restaurants, hotels or other places found on the web or social networks.
Until now, this process required several steps: capturing the screen, remembering the name of the place, opening maps, carrying out a search, then saving it. The new feature, optimized by Google Gemini AI, fully automates this process.

Innovation is part of Google’s wider strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into its daily applications, offering more fluid and intuitive experiences that adapt to the real behavior of users.
To access this new feature, users must ensure that they have the latest version of Google Maps, then go to the “You” tab. A new “screenshot” section appears there, accompanied by an explanatory tutorial.
The system works in two ways. If the user activates the option “authorize access to all photos”, the application will automatically analyze the new screenshots in search of location information – names of establishments, addresses, etc. These detected places are then presented in an “opinion” interface where the user can decide to save or ignore them.
Alternatively, it is possible to deactivate automatic analysis and manually import images from the gallery to have them analyzed. In all cases, screenshots are added to a dedicated list, and the places can be easily transferred to other personalized collections.
For the moment, this feature is only available for Google Maps on iOS in American English, but Google has confirmed that the Android version will follow in the future.
This temporary exclusivity for iOS is unusual for Google, which generally favors its own platform for new features. This is just a matter of time to see this new function disembarked everywhere.
