The earth trembled tonight, in Grésivaudan and near Chambéry. A 3.6 magnitude earthquake was measured for about twenty seconds, on the night of May 6.
“Indeed, there was an earthquake last night around 3:40 am local time of a magnitude about 3.6. It is a rather moderate earthquake that can be felt by the population, ”explains Sophie Lambotte, seismologist at the French seismological central office (BCSF). The latter confirms that the epicenter is in the commune of Sainte-Marie-d’Alloix, in Isère.

The shock felt in several municipalities
The shock was strongly felt by some of our readers, in Chambéry and Theys in particular.
On the site of the Euro-Mediterranean seismological center, a scientific NGO which also measures earthquakes, some Internet users mention a “deaf noise” or even a “boom” heard in the night, especially in the Isérois municipalities of Lumbin, Goncelin and the Adrets, but equally in Saint-Baldolph and Argentina, Savoy.
No injuries or significant damage was recorded by Savoy firefighters.
Call to
Even if this earthquake is considered moderate by the BCSF, seismologists appeal to witnesses: “These testimonies allow us to assess the severity of the jolt, but also to study all the variability of the movement of the soil and in particular the phenomena of site amplification,” adds Sophie Lambotte.
