More “international”
Will Amal Clooney be the next personality to be the subject of the wrath of the impetuous Donald Trump? It is the rumor that several British media echo. According to the Financial Times and the Daily Telegraph, George’s wife (pronounce: Geoooorge) could pay dearly for his clashes to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
But let’s get back. As a reminder, in May 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a highly publicized arrest warrant against the Israeli head of state for war crimes in Gaza. Among the panel of legal experts behind this mandate? A certain … Amal Clooney.
According to the eminent British lawyer, there are “reasonable reasons for believing” that Netanyahu and his Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant, have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity – in particular “famine as a method of war, murder, persecution and extermination”.
“I have sat on this panel, because I believe in the rule of law and the need to protect the life of civilians”
-Amal Clooney, in a press release on the Clooney Foundation website for justice in May 2024
However, specifies the Financial TimesSeveral lawyers involved were recently warned by the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs that their participation could now deprive them of stay in the United States.
Trump’s revenge
It was in particular the case of Karim Khan, prosecutor at the head of this group of experts, struck by a presidential decree signed by Donald Trump in person, last February. This prosecutor at the origin of the sling against Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as his family, was prohibited from entry into the territory – as well as his frozen American assets.
Donald Trump had justified this decision by arguing that the International Tribunal had “conducted illegitimate actions and without foundation targeting America and our close Israel ally”. Not without forgetting to warn that other measures could follow. The executive decree threatens to “tangible and significant consequences” the other persons involved in the decision, in particular the freezing of their property and the blocking of their entry in the United States.
It is still unknown if Amal Clooney is one of the targeted people. Trump’s decree set a period of 60 days to make recommendations concerning other personalities to sanction. The deadline fell on April 7 – and, to date, no new sanction has been announced publicly.
That said, not sure that the Clooney really wanted to venture into the United States by the times that run. The couple of democratic activists are currently spending most of their time in Europe, especially in France, London and Italy. However, they are currently in New York, while George plays in a Broadway room – for which he has his hair. But that’s another story. (MBR)
