While spring is in full swing in the country, a region is preparing to experience an episode worthy of winter.
While the rain falls on several regions, the depression responsible for this gray time slides towards the east of Canada and the Labrador. But behind her, a clearly colder air sets in and could well transform the rain into an impressive snow in certain areas, just in time for Mother’s Day.
A big sideboard
In Quebec, it is especially the North Shore, notably Blanc-Sablon, which could receive a few centimeters of snow on Sunday evening. Further east, in the mountainous sectors, as on the side of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, some traces could also be observed.
But it is especially on the side of Newfoundland and Labrador that the flakes will intensify. In the center of the province, in Happy Valley – Goose Bay in particular, the temperatures should approach the freezing point on Sunday evening, creating conditions conducive to significant accumulations. Between 20 and 40 centimeters of snow are planned locally.
That’s not all: on Monday, gusts reaching up to 80 km/h could lift the fallen snow, causing power -up conditions in places. Caution will be on the road.
Late snow in this region
If the forecasts are confirmed, it will be one of the latest episodes of snow in recent decades for the region. The last snow -lined over 20 cm in May dates back to May 6, 2020, with 21 cm fallen to Happy Valley–goose Bay. However, it is necessary to go back to May 12 and 13, 2010 to find such a late comparable accumulation in the month, with 30 cm. Note that since the year 2000, this phenomenon has only occurred four times in May.
All months combined, the record for a snowfall of more than 20 cm the latest remains that of June 28 and 29, 1980, with 25.1 cm.
