In the first quarter of 2025, imports of Russian natural gas to Georgia exceeded those from Azerbaijan for the first time since the start of official recordings.
For 18 years that the National Statistics Office of Georgia has been holding this data, Azerbaijani gas was the main source of importation of the country. However, during the first three months of 2025, Georgia bought $ 100.6 million in natural gas from Russia, compared to $ 82.4 million in Azerbaijan.
This development is part of a more generally downward trend in imports of Azerbaijani gas in recent years. In the first nine months of 2024, Georgia bought for $ 160.2 million in Azerbaijan gases, a sharp decline compared to the 313.5 million recorded during the same period in 2023. At the same time, imports from Russia increased considerably, Georgia having increased its purchases by $ 90.1 million, at the corresponding period of the previous year.
