The European Commission has published a “roadmap” describing the plans aimed at ending ’s dependence on Russian energy in the coming years, BBC reported.

According to plans, the import of all liquefied gas and natural gas from to the members of the European will be prohibited by the end of 2027.

“We will no longer allow Russia to use energy as a weapon against us … We will no longer indirectly contribute to filling the war funds (from the Kremlin),” the European Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said on Tuesday at a press in Strasbourg.

In response to these plans, the head of the Kremlin Dmitri Peskov told the reuters agency on Tuesday that Europe “was shot in the foot”.

The EU promised to end its energy relations with Russia after the latter launched its large -scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

A series of legislative proposals will be published in June, forcing the EU member states to develop “national plans” to gradually move away from imports of Russian gas and oil, according to the European Commission.

EU member states must submit strategies to replace Russian oil imports by the end of 2027.

Countries have also been invited to establish strategies to stop imports of uranium, enriched uranium and other nuclear materials from Russia.

EU’s dependence on oil, gas and Russian nuclear has decreased sharply since the start of the war in Ukraine, but the block still imports large amounts of energy from Russia.

According to the report, imports of Russian gas from EU countries increased from 45 % in 2021 to 19 % in 2024.

Russian oil imports have also dropped, from 27 % in early 2022 to 3 % today.

According to the report, efforts must be made to reduce the dependence of the block with regard to supplies, and nuclear services from Russia, because more than 14 % of EU uranium was imported from Russia in 2024.

EU’s dependence on gas, oil and Russian nuclear fuel poses “risks for our economy and security” and financially supports the war economy in Russia, the report said.

The action plan also includes measures to impact the “ghost fleets” used by Russia – oilmen “whose property and insurance are not clear” to maintain its oil exports and bypass sanctions.
