Donald Trump said at the NBC microphone that he was planning to give a new stay to Tiktok, in the absence of agreement with Beijing.
It is a soap opera that is not likely to end. As Fortune reports, Donald Trump said Tiktok would be “protected” and that he would extend the deadline to prevent the application of short videos from being banished from the United States.
“I might not say, but Tiktok is particularly close to my heart,” he said to NBC. “I have a small special affection because I have won 36 points with young people.”
Indeed, last year, the Biden administration signed a law threatening Tiktok for prohibition in the United States. Concretely, Bytedance, the parent company of the application, had until January to Sell American activities under penalty of being prohibited in the country.
“Simply delay” the deadline
Donald Trump decided, twice, to postpone the entry into force of 75 days. Technically, the Chinese platform therefore has until June 19 to comply with the law.
And the President of the United States does not seem to have the intention of enforcing this law. He said that if no agreement was concluded to sell Tiktok American operations before the new deadline, he would grant the company another extension.
It is not surprising since Donald Trump had already said last April wanting to “simply delay” the Tiktok agreement with China “until this case works”, adding that everything depended on China.
Donald Trump’s announcements concerning customs duties have made any agreement to buy Tiktok, despite the many investor proposals on the table. Washington decided last April To 145% raise the surcharge targeting Beijing.
However, Donald Trump does not have the power to cancel the law that threatens the social network, only to suspend it. For this, he should obtain the convention of the Congress, which had voted with large bipartisan support the ban by Tiktok in April 2024.
