Windows 11 24h2: The update now sets up on its own, even if you don’t want it

For a few days, a has appeared in Windows Update: Windows 11, 24H2 version. If you have a Windows 11 Family or Pro PC (Versions 9:2 p.m., 10 p.m. or 11 p.m.), that your machine is not linked to a professional field and that no compatibility blocking is in place, this update is now considered ready – and it can impose itself.

Windows 11 24H2 enters the final phase and is essential to your system

The novelty, barely announced by Microsoft: no need to click on “Search updates”. On some machines, Windows 11 24H2 downloads alone, in the background. And once the files have been recovered, it is impossible to go back. The installation can be deferred, but more canceled.

Microsoft had already started this automation in January. Officially, nothing settles down without manual action, but Windows Update now works via invisible checks. As soon as a device is deemed compatible, the 24H2 version is automatically downloaded.

At this point, a notification invites you to restart. But no button allows you to refuse the installation. The process is launched.

Why this is important, even if you have no problem

Windows 11 24H2 marks a major step. It is based on a new technical base, common to classic PCs and the next LTSC editions, more stable and thought for pros environments. It is also the version to officially activate the support of so - Copilot+PCs, with the integration of AI components, including the NPU.

Clearly, Microsoft standardizes its ecosystem around 24h2. But this automatic deployment is problematic to those who prefer to wait, test, or simply keep your hand. Especially since no official option allows you to refuse the installation once the download is launched.

Can we still prevent 24 from settling?

Yes, but more via classic parameters. To block the update, you must either use the Wushowhide tool – which allows you to hide the 24H2 version before installation – or manually deactivate the Windows Update service, which also blocks safety fixes. Pro editions can delay updates of functionalities up to one year via group strategies. But for most users, these options are not very visible, even inaccessible.

And this is only a stay: ultimately, 24 hours a long time will become the compulsory basis to benefit from security updates. Hence the importance of understanding what is playing out now: it is less a question of functionality than user control.
