Canadian consumers devote a larger part of their food budget in catering. It is now almost 40% of their food expenses that are made in a restaurant.

This is one of the data revealed by the food consumption index published in a report by Dalhousie University on Tuesday.
Affirming to be more and more worried about food inflation, Canadians claim to pay $ 311 per month on average for their grocery store, which is significantly the same amount as six months ago.
On the other hand, during the same period, they increased their level of monthly expenditure in restoration of eight dollars to reach almost $ 200.

For the specialist in the food industry at Dalhousie University, Sylvain Charlebois, this data is a sign of a “transfer of wealth between details and service”.

The latter subjects the hypothesis that the increase in telework explains this situation.
“People work at home much more. So we want to go out from time to time, change the air and to do this, we must spend. We’re going to a cafe, we’re going to a small local restaurant to meet someone to have a kind of business dinner or business lunch, ”suggests the expert.
