Tired of the classic family photo? Are you looking for a little originality? Have your irises photographed. This concept has gradually taken root in Reunion Island. The practice can be worrying but it would nevertheless be safe for the eyes, according to an ophthalmologist (Photo: rb/www.imazpress.com)
Smitch Chakira, a literature student, is seduced by the concept. This artistic style “can become an important heirloom for families.” “It would be great to see the differences and similarities between my irises and those of my family and friends,” he explains. “It can be a nice souvenir to show to future generations,” he adds.
In Reunion, there are still few offering iris photography. At the Port, at Cap Sacré Coeur, Joffrey Savigny, passionate about photography, decided to present the concept.
The original style of photography created “a craze in its beginnings and which is starting to become more popular in Reunion Island” according to the manager of Personaliz. “It especially appeals to families who like to see if their children have mom or dad’s eyes,” says Laly Savigny, the photographer’s daughter. Intrigued by these highly zoomed-in photographs of the eyes, Joffrey Savigny sought information from professionals in France and abroad to perfect his technique, choose the right equipment and also learn about the possible risks of this practice.
Laly Savigny manages the Iris rainbow stand in the shopping mall with her father. She explains “it was my father who created the box to photograph irises with equipment and a lens adapted to put our customers at ease”. Watch:
However, Joffrey Savigny has chosen not to offer this photograph to children under 7 years old for “extra precaution”.
“We don’t prefer to do it so as not to give them an epileptic seizure with the flash” explains the 23-year-old young woman. “You have to be able to open your eyes wide and not move too much during the shot.” Watch:

Joffrey Savigny explains: “the light of the flash” to capture the eyes “is equivalent to daylight”, therefore without any real risk. “It’s really an artificial light which can be surprising, but it won’t damage your eyes”, reassures Laly Savigny.
“A photographer knows how to manage lights and flashes. He is not there to give you a powerful shot of light to destroy your eye,” adds the father.
A practice that is not harmful to the eye, confirms Doctor Adam Thomas, ophthalmologist at Pôle Vision Réunion in Moufia (Saint-Denis). “It’s just a photo with a device that contains a flash and a microscope inside to better define the pupil with precision,” he believes.
“This practice is not dangerous for the eye, so all types of irises can be photographed without problem,” says the ophthalmologist.
