The Museum of Art & History (MOAH) of Lancaster, California, presents Osceola Refetoff : Magic and Realismfrom January 25 to April 13. Osceola Refetoff is a Canadian-American visual artist known for his innovative use of infrared and pinhole photography to document the relationship between the environment and humans. Across parallel careers in photojournalism and fine art, his work is characterized by a hyperrealistic and nuanced vision, often producing surreal, even dreamlike images.
Magic and Realism examines a wide range of images from different bodies of work, showcasing a new form of alternative photographic processes. Images such as Duplexity (2023) from the series Chromatopia de Refetoff demonstrate his fusion of modern and historical photographic techniques. Analog lens filters are used in tandem with modified digital cameras to create vibrant, luminous color combinations, expressing a reality that exists just beyond what human eyes see. Additionally, a pinhole camera is used in many of his images to create an aesthetic reminiscent of Pictorialism, a photographic movement that originated in the late 19th century, which emphasized aura and affect rather than image. simple documentation.
A graduate of New York University’s MFA program in cinema, Osceola’s film background informs a cinematic approach to constructing photographic narratives. His photojournalism project focused on the desert, High & Dryis a regular show on the program Artbound from PBS SoCal, which earned him two Los Angeles Press Club awards for Photojournalist of the Year.
For Refetoff’s second solo exhibition at MOAH, the museum is publishing a mid-career monograph of his experimental and alternative photography.
