It's been ten years since Baptiste Blanchard was self-employed. He has been working in photography studio B for seven years Carrélocated at a more than strategic location in Les Sables-d'Olonne: on rue Travot, in the city center, halfway between the beach and the town hall.
A studio which has all the assets to succeed, but which the photographer is forced to give up due to a series of misfortunes.
“To create a complementary activity, I bought a photo studio in Méribel which got off to a good start,” explains the photographer. Unfortunately, the health crisis came to shatter the promising beginnings of the studio which was never able to recover.
The Sablais studio was able to support both activities for a time, until Baptiste Blanchard was able to resell the mountain business. But the damage to the treasury was done. It is therefore difficult to resist the crisis, economic this time, of 2024. “Less travel, therefore fewer identity photos. »
An equation of formidable simplicity which forces Baptiste Blanchard to put down his camera to invest himself as an employee in a completely different activity.
Keeping the studio going
So, now that business seems to be returning, the turn has already been made.
“I took on a new rhythm. It's hard to go back. I'm not the good captain anymore. The store needs a professional photographer in charge. »
Economically, Baptiste Blanchard would undoubtedly have everything to gain from simply selling the premises.
“But I would be disappointed if professional photography disappeared from the area. »
Because he is convinced, “a neighborhood photographer will always have his place in Les Sables-d’Olonne”.
Advantages
For ID photosbecause many return from photo booths, whose photos are too often refused by town halls. And go ask a machine to take a baby's ID photo! “The ID photo guarantees year-round activity. »
Family photos?
“You need a technique, a framework, management of the subject, and above all loving children, knowing how to communicate. »
Enough to create strong links with customers.
“A resident of Deux-Sèvres comes back every year with her son for a photo shoot.”
Beach photos? The Grande Plage is a few steps away and “the fact of having a location on the street reassures tourists”.
The wedding photo? The proximity of the town hall also speaks for itself.
The studio still employs Mélanie, 29 years old, who is well versed in the running of the store.
So many assets which should allow a photographer to offer a second life to the B2 studio and guarantee the continuity of neighborhood photography. As long as you are passionate.
And often get the best tips: “People leave with a smile. »
