Although he has been traveling across France for several months with his new show Himself, Gad Elmaleh will not go to the polls on Sunday (June 30, 24) for the first round of the legislative elections. The reason is simple: he does not have French nationality.

In La Tribune Dimanche, the comedian born in Casablanca recalled that “you have to be French to vote”. However, he is “Moroccan and Canadian”. And it was the administrative burden that got the better of his intention to apply for French nationality.

“I started the process a few years ago but it was too laborious, I gave up,” explains the man who became a grandfather last year. “I have a residence permit, I pay my taxes in France, I benefit from the resulting benefits such as Social Security. »

Above all, Gad Elmaleh “loves (his) immigrant status”. “Like my parents, I am infinitely grateful to France, it is she who allowed me to work and be successful,” assures the ex-spouse of Charlotte Casiraghi.

Even without a voter card, the 53-year-old actor has a political conscience. “The only thing I don’t have is the right to vote. Which does not prevent me, each time, from asking myself who I would vote for,” adds Gad Elmaleh.
