He didn’t expect such a reaction. Rod Stewart gave a concert this Friday in Leipzig (Germany). On the stage of the Quarterback Immobilien Arena, the 79-year-old singer performed his hit Rhythm Of My Heartwhich he said he considers to be a song against the war in Ukraine, says Huffington Post. On the big screen, a Ukrainian flag appeared, followed by a giant photo of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

As videos of this moment of the concert relayed on social networks show, this choice was not to the taste of certain spectators. We can indeed hear boos coming from the audience. The Irish News explains that this reaction of rejection could be explained by the fact that Germany opposes the sanctions against Russia that the European Union is considering. These could target Russian natural gas and Berlin could fear the effects on the country and its inhabitants.

Anti-Putin positions

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Rod Stewart has taken a stand against Russia several times. He went so far as to call Vladimir Putin an “asshole” in an interview given to Sky News. The interpreter of Baby Jane assured that it was his duty to do something “charitable” to help the victims of the conflict.

The singer also explained to Daily Mirror having rented an apartment to accommodate a family of refugees. “Words cannot describe what we are seeing, the bombing of innocent children, hospitals and playgrounds. […] I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, the artist confided. This is evil, pure evil.”
