31/10/24 – Acquisition – New Haven, Yale University Art Gallery – We learned about it after the publication of our recent brief devoted to the large painting by Francesco Hayez acquired by the Yale University Art Gallery through the Canesso gallery in Paris [1]this first purchase of a painting by the eminent representative of Italian romanticism was quickly followed by a second from the Benappi Fine Art gallery in London. Following the Doge Marino Faliero accuses Michele Steno of being the author of the insulting writing that is on the ducal throneentered the European collections of the American museum a Self-portrait later in the guise of a leader of the Renaissance imbued with the same historicist influence. Major acquisitions for Yale, which until then only kept a drawing by Francesco Hayez from the recent and generous donation from New York collectors Roberta Olson and Alexander Johnson (see the news item dated 5/22/23 and the interview), they are also for the collections of American museums where until now only a single small canvas by the artist seemed to appear, Christ and the adulterous woman at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore. Let us remember here that few museums outside Italy conserve works by Francesco Hayez, a national glory largely and unfairly unknown abroad. Fortunately, the Louvre was able to purchase one twelve years ago (see the news item from 12/13/12).
