One image among 15,000 others. Photographer Rafael Fernández Caballero received the title of “Underwater Photographer of the Year” on Thursday in the “Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024” photography competition. His photo of a fin whale about to devour a school of fish in the waters of Baja California Sur, Mexico, fascinated the jury. After immortalizing this painting of marine life, the Spanish artist said he had experienced “one of the most special and crazy moments of his life.”

The competition, organized by Oceanographic Magazine and its partner Blancpain, aims to reward photographers from around the world who strive to reveal the wonders of the ocean. It also serves as a reminder of the impact of humans on the natural marine environment, such as the winning shot by Frederik Brogaard, who photographed a whaling scene in Iceland.
