He never worked to earn money. He didn’t need it. The large income left by his father’s fortune was more than enough for him. He did not seek to sell his works. He sometimes gave some to his friends, among other largesse. As a joke, people said of him that he painted “in his spare moments”. Was he bored? Certainly not. A wise collector, generous patron, recognized philatelist, horticulturist, boater, skipper, naval architect, he plunged every day into modern life with the enthusiasm of an adolescent, finding after all these distractions the time to create, to take a peaceful look at the world. No doubt he was a profoundly happy man.
