The Gambia Drug Enforcement Agency (DLEAG) on Sunday announced the arrest of three Nigerian nationals and the seizure of 40,227 ecstasy tablets, following a sting operation at the international airport. from Banjul.
The operation, which began at the end of November on the basis of information concerning an attempted smuggling from India, culminated on December 18 with the arrest of the suspects in Amdalai and Serrekunda. The package, weighing 26.4 kilograms, had been deliberately misaddressed to avoid detection.
The three suspects, identified as Ikechukweu Livinus Akwusaia (alias IK), Ifeanacho Raphael and Sunday Ainbgaoso, are said to have played different roles in this trafficking attempt. According to investigators, IK, nephew of the alleged sender based in India, was responsible for coordinating the receipt of the package.
This operation, carried out in collaboration with the airport customs services (GRA), highlights the increasing sophistication of the methods used by traffickers and the importance of inter-service cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.
The suspects are currently in custody while the investigation continues.
