United States: A hunter shoots a bear, which falls on his friend and kills him

“Dad was doing what he loved most.” It was in these terms that Josh Harvey paid tribute to his father Lester, who died on December 9, during a hunting trip between Richmond and Danville, Virginia. The 58-year-old American was with a group – which included his son – who were chasing a black bear. The animal having climbed into a tree to take refuge, one of the hunters moved a few meters away and shot the plantigrade. The bear came upon Lester, who was about 10 feet from the tree trunk.

Lester was seriously injured. One of the hunters tried to provide first aid to the fifty-year-old, who was transported to two successive hospitals. The unfortunate man succumbed to his injuries on Friday, four days after the accident. The Virginia Department of Natural Resources said there were no charges filed at this time in connection with the incident. Lester leaves behind a wife and five children.

“My father was the hardest worker I knew. He worked or hunted. The ONLY time he missed work was hunting,” his daughter Lindsey wrote on Facebook. “I am broken beyond anything I could imagine,” added the American. “I’m so grateful for all the memories we’ve made and everything you’ve taught me. I wouldn’t be the man I am now if it wasn’t for you…Heaven has just gained a great man,” we can read on Josh’s Facebook profile. Lester’s funeral will be held on Friday.
