UN condemns attacks on peacekeepers in Lebanon

The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned attacks in recent weeks against the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He called on ‘all parties’ to respect the security of peacekeepers.

In a statement, council members condemn several attacks targeting UNIFIL positions and injuring several peacekeepers. They do not name the perpetrators of these ‘incidents’, but cite the dates of several of them.

Like on October 29 when a rocket, ‘probably’ fired by Hezbollah or its allies, hit the UNIFIL headquarters, or on November 7 when five peacekeepers were injured during an Israeli strike and on November 8 when UNIFIL accused the Israeli army of damaging one of its positions in an action described as ‘deliberate and direct’.

‘Deep concern’

The Security Council calls on ‘all parties to take all measures to respect the safety and security of UNIFIL personnel and facilities’. ‘Blue helmets must never be the target of attacks,’ insists the declaration, which provides ‘full support’ to UNIFIL.

More generally regarding the conflict in Lebanon, where tension continues to rise between Israel and Hezbollah, the UN Security Council expressed its ‘deep concern regarding the victims and suffering of civilians, the destruction of infrastructure civilian losses, the damage (inflicted) to cultural heritage sites in Lebanon, the threats against the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Baalbeck and Tyre, as well as the growing number of displaced people.
