Vote for Donald Trump and AOC

Donald Trump improved his 2020 results across the United States, including in the Big Apple, where he received 30% of the vote, or 7 percentage points more than four years ago. And it was in the constituency of Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that he achieved one of his best New York performances, collecting 33% of the vote, or 11 percentage points more than in 2020. AOC , she won 69% of the votes against 31% for her Republican rival. This means that some of his voters also voted for Trump. For what ?

On Sunday, AOC asked the question on her Instagram account, where her follower count stands at 8.1 million. It is understood that this figurehead of the progressive movement did not necessarily appeal to the more moderate or conservative voters in Queens and the Bronx, many of whom are of Hispanic or Asian origin, and who voted for Trump because of inflation, crime or the migrant crisis. But the answers from AOC’s interlocutors are not uninteresting.

“It’s very simple… You and Trump care about the working class,” one voter wrote.

“I wanted change, so I chose Trump and [j’ai voté] blue for the rest of to slow things down,” wrote another.

“I voted for Trump, but I like you and Bernie [Sanders]. I don’t trust either party, nor establishment politicians,” wrote a third.

As can be seen in the text messages below, some voters also voted against Harris because of her unwavering support for Israel in the Gaza war:

The moral of this story? There is probably more than one. But one thing is certain: economic populism can lead to voting for Trump as much as for AOC.
