On the decline for months, the Ukrainian defenders continue to give up a lot of ground. They appear unable to stop a Russian push aimed at maximizing territorial gains before the installation of a new administration in Washington, which will have consequences for the conflict that has been ongoing for almost three years.
Estimates vary, but October saw a record advance by the Russian army: between 480 and 540 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory came under its control, more than in September and August. Over the entire year 2023, Moscow had occupied 584 square kilometers.
