A 36-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with negligence after the tragic death of a baby she was supposed to be watching. Monday near San Antonio (Texas), Erika Castro entrusted her one-year-old son to Heather Rodriguez so that she could watch over him in her absence. The young mother knew that the thirty-year-old had three dogs, but she had told her that they would be kept away from her child. However, instead of fulfilling her mission as a babysitter, Heather went to work, leaving the baby alone with her 13-year-old daughter.
The teenager and the infant were in a room at the time of the tragedy. The door was closed, but already damaged by the pit bulls. The dogs, who already had a reputation for being dangerous, had no trouble forcing their way into the room, where they attacked the baby. According to Sheriff Javier Salazar, the teenager was “heroic”, engaging in “a tug of war” against the animals for several minutes. But she was forced to leave the child alone while she called the emergency services.
“I thank this girl, because she did her best,” Jiryiah’s mother told KENS 5. Seriously injured in the head and throat, the little boy died of his injuries a few hours later in hospital. The teenager was not seriously injured, but she was traumatized by this tragedy. “I saw footage of the baby from our officers’ body cameras. “It’s heartbreaking to see someone in this state, especially a one-year-old baby,” the sheriff said.
Heather Rodriguez’s dogs were previously found “on the loose” earlier this year after reports of “stray dogs” preventing a person from getting out of their car.
