War in Ukraine. Russian drone attack, Zelensky condemns the strikes… update on the night

Russia launched several rounds of drone attacks on the morning of Monday September 30, 2024 against the Ukrainian capital kyiv, where air defense systems were activated for several hours to repel these strikes, the Ukrainian military said.

No casualties or damage have yet been reported by the Ukrainian authorities.

Reuters journalists heard several explosions in kyiv appearing to come from air defense system activity and saw objects exploding in the sky over the Ukrainian capital.

The Ukrainian Air Force said via Telegram messaging that several groups of Russian drones were launched in the direction of kyiv and western Ukraine.

Moscow had no immediate comment on the attack.

Zelensky denounces Russian strikes

The Ukrainian president has condemned the series of Russian bombings on Zaporizhia, in southern Ukraine.

“Aerial bombs were dropped on apartment buildings and urban infrastructure”indicated Volodymyr Zelensky on the X platform. “In addition, Russian forces carried out strikes with guided bombs in the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Sumy regions. In Hloukhiv, several apartment buildings were damaged. In the Kharkiv region, apartment buildings, energy infrastructure and medical facilities were affected. This is the daily terror that Ukraine faces”.

The Ukrainian head of state took the opportunity to launch a new appeal for Western military aid: “Russia uses around a hundred guided bombs against Ukraine every day. This is a constant reminder to all our partners who can help that Ukraine needs more long-range capabilities, more air defense systems and tougher sanctions against Russia.”.

Prime Minister meets Iranian President

Moscow announced that Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Michoustin would meet Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian on Monday September 30, 2024 in Tehran, amid tensions in the Middle East after the death of the leader of pro-Iranian Hezbollah.

This meeting will take place after Russia strongly condemned “the political assassination committed by Israel” of Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.

It is intended for “discuss all Russian-Iranian cooperation in the commercial, economic, cultural and humanitarian fields”according to a press release from the Russian government. The discussions will focus in particular on “the realization of major joint projects in the fields of transport, energy, industry and agriculture”.

Mr. Michoustin will also meet with Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref.

Mr. Pezeshkian is also scheduled to meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during a visit to Russia next month to attend the BRICS summit.

Russian losses

The Ukrainian General Staff has published its regular assessment of the losses suffered by Russian troops since the invasion of the country on February 24, 2022.

According to kyiv, 651,810 Moscow soldiers were rendered unable to fight by being killed, wounded or taken prisoner, an increase of 1,170 soldiers in the space of twenty-four hours.

Kremlin forces also reportedly lost 25,495 tankers and supply vehicles (+84). The count also shows the destruction of 18,795 artillery pieces (+62), 17,476 armored vehicles (+38) or even 16,186 drones (+93), 8,869 assault tanks (+9) and 2 610 cruise missiles.

The regular publication of these figures, which could not be verified, is part of the Ukrainian communications strategy intended to undermine the morale of Moscow’s troops.
