Washington announces $535 million in humanitarian aid for Syria

The United States announced on Thursday humanitarian aid of nearly $535 million for the Syrian people.

The announcement was made by U.S. Undersecretary of State for Civil Security, Democracy and Human Rights Uzra Zeya on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The aid aims in particular to meet the needs of refugees, internally displaced persons and the most vulnerable host communities, the US State Department said in a press release.

“These needs include emergency shelter, food assistance, access to healthcare and education, water, sanitation and hygiene supplies, livelihood support and protection for people in vulnerable situations,” added the same source.

The total amount of U.S. humanitarian aid to the Syrian people now stands at more than $18 billion since the start of the crisis in that country 13 years ago, the State Department said.

According to the UN, more than six million Syrians are refugees or asylum seekers abroad and more than seven million are displaced within the country.

Across the country, nearly 17 million people, more than 70% of the population, are now in need of humanitarian assistance and protection, with women and children particularly affected.
