Dresses, tickets for Taylor Swift… British PM criticised for receiving gifts worth over £100,000

DDresses for his wife, football tickets or tickets to the Taylor Swift concert: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under fire on Thursday for having accepted donations worth more than £100,000 since the end of 2019, more than any other member of Parliament.

Most of these donations, which are legal and declared in the parliamentary register, were made while Keir Starmer was leader of the Labour opposition, but he has continued to benefit from them since he arrived in Downing Street, after Labour won the general election in early July.

The subject has been in the news for several days, as the government warned the British that efforts would have to be made in the face of budgetary constraints. It thus announced the elimination of an energy check for ten million retirees.

According to a Sky News investigation, Keir Starmer has received more than £107,145 (€127,278) in donations since December 2019, far more than any other member of parliament. In second place is another Labour member, Lucy Powell, with £40,289 in gifts.

The main donor is Waheed Alli, a multi-millionaire member of the House of Lords. The total amount of his gifts is £39,122, for accommodation, “working clothes” (worth £16,200) and several pairs of glasses.

Keir Starmer, a fan of London club Arsenal, has received football match invitations worth more than £40,000. Tickets for the Taylor Swift concert he attended with his wife in June were worth around £4,000.

His wife Victoria received designer clothes worth more than £5,000. This gift from Waheed Alli was not declared in the register by Keir Starmer.
