Gusts of wind that can reach 110km/h, torrential rains… This is what awaits the European coasts in the hours to come. A new depression named Oscar is coming straight to Europe.
The meteorological phenomenon should go up along the coasts. From this Tuesday June 6 and until Thursday June 8, the storm will fly over the Spanish Canary Islands and the Portuguese island of Madeira.
The British Foreign Office, the Spanish Meteorological Agency and the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere are on alert. The Spanish weather forecast site fears episodes “intense rain and wind in the archipelago between Tuesday June 6 and Wednesday June 7”.
Winds at 110 km / h and torrential rains
The Portuguese meteorological site IMPAC, has issued red warnings for “heavy and persistent” rains in southern and coastal areas of Madeira. He also issued a warning in the mountains of the island where the winds could reach speeds of 110 km / h, specifies our colleague from Euronews.
The Canary Islands will also experience disruptions due to inclement weather and the passage of Depression Oscar. Winds in Tenerife and Gran Canaria could reach 88 km/h in places.
The other areas, although spared by the passage of the heart of the storm, could nevertheless be affected by heavy rains.
Many disruptions expected
Air traffic has been put on hold at some airports until the weather calms down. On the island of Madeira, 28 flights were canceled and 12 delayed on Monday June 5 according to information reported by the local airport site. A few planes managed to land at Cristiano Ronaldo Funchal Airport today, but many were canceled due to weather conditions.
France also affected?
The site of Météo France has not yet given any alert concerning the depression Oscar. However, it could be that the French coasts feel the effects of its passage near France.
The France weather site in a note published on Sunday June 4, specifies that the storm will approach Europe from the middle of the week and “will bring warmer air over France with unstable weather along the Atlantic coast. This will end almost three weeks of high pressure conditions over the northern half”.
The Spanish Meteorological Agency has shared the forecast maps on the evolution of the storm’s path. We note that the areas that could experience some bad weather are the cities located near the Atlantic coast, such as Bordeaux or La Rochelle. Indeed, Thursday afternoon, Oscar should cause thunderstorms on the French Atlantic coast, reports the Weather Channel.
On the Mediterranean basin, not really a concern, although the coming weekend promises to be mixed with some risk of showers and thunderstorms in places in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes.
