Greek police have launched a preliminary investigation after this surprising discovery made by a man. According to initial analyses, it is a statue dating from the Hellenistic period, between 323-31 BC.

A surprising discovery. In Greece, the police announced this Wednesday that they had opened an investigation into a statue found by a citizen in a black plastic bag, “near trash cans”, in a street in the region of Thessaloniki, the country’s second city. Quickly estimated by an archaeological service, the marble statue, discovered without a head, dates from the “Hellenistic” period, i.e. from 323 to 31 BC.

Numerous analyzes will be carried out

This statue, which measures 80 centimeters high and 25 cm wide, will be transferred to the Crime Investigation Department of Northern Greece for laboratory examination and then to the Antiquities Department to be evaluated and preserved, concludes the press release.
