In his first television interview since being sworn in, United States President Donald Trump essentially continued his election campaign themes.
“He acts like he’s still in an election. He continues to attack Democrats on the management of the Los Angeles fires and on Joe Biden’s latest decisions. He said absolutely nothing about his real immigration policies,” says political scientist Pierre Martin, professor at the University of Montreal and columnist for Journal.
Broadcast Wednesday evening on Fox News, the interview with host Sean Hannity, a friend for more than 30 years of Donald Trump, was recorded in the afternoon in the Oval Office.
Mr. Martin was not surprised to see the President of the United States completely ignore the question of the 25% tariffs that his government intends to impose on Canadian imports from 1is FEBRUARY. This interview with Fox News – which the professor describes as a “great infomercial” – was not intended to embarrass Mr. Trump.
“Moreover, for his political base, Canada is not an interesting subject,” he adds.
Immigration et inclusion
During the day, the new president’s first bill, aimed at putting an end to illegal immigration, received the approval of Congress. Irregular migrants who have been convicted or charged with certain crimes will be arrested.
Another major focus of the 78-year-old billionaire’s first decisions: dismantling policies to promote diversity within the federal government. All individuals employed by the federal administration in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) programs will be on forced leave.
-Barely invested on Monday, the Republican signed a decree limiting the genders recognized by the State to two, “male and female”, thereby denying the official existence of transgender people.
Since the election of Donald Trump, several large American companies have ended their DEIA programs, in particular Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), McDonald’s restaurants, the manufacturer Ford and Walmart supermarkets.
Complimentary interview
For Mr. Martin, the interview revealed no surprises. “It was a complacent interview. We recognized the Donald Trump of the campaign. Lies, insults and slander towards his adversaries.”
Sean Hannity, known for his conservative political positions and his support for Donald Trump, has often been described as one of his “informal advisors.”
The show Hannity attracts an average of 2.8 million viewers. It is the most listened to on the network.
