A coordinated operation between the Belgian police and the American FBI made it possible to thwart a kidnapping plan in Miami, thanks to five arrests.

A 19-year-old man suspected of being involved in this project was arrested on January 13 in Maasmechelen, a town in northern Belgium on the border with the Netherlands, the public prosecutor’s office in the Belgian province of Limburg (north) announced on Wednesday. ). He was incarcerated.

The same day, four other suspects were arrested in the United States, also implicated in this planned kidnapping with demand for ransom, which is being investigated by an investigating judge from Limburg.

The Prosecutor’s Office did not specify what type of crime was involved, nor revealed anything about the profile of the targeted person.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the four suspects arrested across the Atlantic were probably in contact with the man from Maasmechelen via encrypted Telegram messaging, and all were to meet in Miami for this “violent” kidnapping.

Two firearms were discovered in the vehicle in which the four arrests took place in the United States.
