“The real question mark is Syria.” A few hours after this comment by United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, which highlighted the immense question of the democratic future of a former ruthless dictatorship liberated by an Islamist movement, the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs in person tried to bring some answers.

Questioned by Tony Blair who, for a moment, bordered on condescension in the face of his answers and suggested that he speak in Arabic before discovering that he spoke very well in English, Assaad Hassan Al Shibani indulged in a half-hour communications exercise at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He knew he was expected on issues of women’s rights, minorities, respect for democracy. Didn’t Antonio Guterres emphasize that very morning that “the new Syrian government has customs that raise a lot of questions – there are signs of tolerance and openness, but let’s see how that will translate”?
