“Ceasefire”, “stop the massacre”, “silence the guns”! These are the words which, since Wednesday January 15 [et la conclusion d’un accord sur un cessez-le-feu dans la bande de Gaza et la libération d’otages]relieve and soothe. “Release the hostages”, “deliver the prisoners”, “women and children first”! Performative vocabulary, which comforts and consoles. The emotions of the victims, in the foreground, overwhelm us: the tears of Israeli families torn by anguish, not knowing whether they will see a living or dead relative again; the tears of Palestinian families, some who find a brother or cousin imprisoned for decades, others forever deprived of a loved one, a roof, a place to live. And then, the analyses, which linger in the background, because the heart without reason could do little in the face of the churning of the stomach, resentments and reheated hatreds.
