The Holy Father sends a message to the 47th President of the United States of America on the day of his inauguration, this Monday, January 20. Francis expresses his wish for a more just American society, without hatred, discrimination or exclusion. He also says he prays that Donald Trump will promote peace and reconciliation between peoples.

A few hours before Donald Trump was sworn in inside the Capitol, seat of the United States Congress, Pope Francis sent him a message summarizing his wishes for this new presidency. If he prays for the forty-seventh American president, it is so that “Almighty God” grants him “wisdom, strength and protection” in the discharge of his high office so that under his leadership the American people may prosper and always strive to “build a fairer society, where there is no place for hatred, discrimination or exclusion”. The Holy Father thus hopes that Donald Trump will be inspired by the ideals of his nation, “which is a land of opportunity and welcome for all”.

Peace and reconciliation

The Supreme Pontiff also expresses his concerns for the foreign policy of the United States, “as our human family faces many challenges, not to mention the scourge of war”. He thus asks God to “to guide” the efforts of the new host of the White House to “promote peace and reconciliation between peoples”. The Pope concludes his message by invoking Donald Trump, his family and “the beloved American people” “an abundance of divine blessings”.
