Nicolas Maduro was sworn in as Venezuela’s president on Friday for a third term.
CARACAS, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) — Nicolas Maduro was sworn in as Venezuela’s president for a third term on Friday.
Taking the oath of office on the Constitution before National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, he pledged to ensure “peace, prosperity, equality and the new democracy” in his country.
“I swear on history, I swear on my life and I will fulfill it,” said Mr. Maduro, who then received the presidential sash and the necklace of the order of the Liberators, symbols of presidential authority in Venezuela.
In his post-swearing speech, he called for a broad process of dialogue in the country “to move forward together towards a major constitutional reform that will further democratize Venezuela.”
This reform, explained Mr. Maduro, will aim to update “the principles of the Constitution based on the new economy and the new society” and to “defend the country against new technological threats.”
“Today I will sign the decree creating a broad national commission to develop the constitutional reform project, aimed at a process of democratization and defining the new society and the new economy of Venezuela,” continued the president.
On July 28, 2024, Nicolas Maduro won the presidential election with 51.95% of the votes, according to figures from the National Electoral Council.
