Advertisements on Meta, deemed misleading and denounced by the Nigerian regulator, concern uncertified medical and cosmetic products, likely to endanger the health of consumers.
The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has denounced the spread of advertisements deemed unethical and misleading on Meta platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
In a statement issued on January 6, 2025, ARCON expressed concern regarding advertisements promoting products claiming to treat various ailments or offer cosmetic solutions without clinical or scientific proof of their effectiveness. According to the Council, these products have not been certified by the competent authorities and present serious health risks for consumers.
In its press release sent to APA, the Council also accused the owners of the brands concerned of taking advantage of the opportunities offered by digital platforms to distribute unapproved advertisements. ARCON recalls that these advertisements were not submitted to the Advertising Standards Committee, as required by the ARCON Act No. 23 of 2022, which regulates advertising activities in Nigeria.
-The Director General of ARCON, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, announced that measures would be taken to sanction individuals and organizations responsible for these practices, in accordance with existing laws and the Advertising Code.
Meta and its subsidiaries have not yet reacted to the accusations made by ARCON.
