“You need to stop taking care of other people’s children.” The threat is written next to a cross on a piece of paper slipped into a file in Claudia Caramanna’s office. The chief prosecutor of the Juvenile Court of Palermo, Sicily, received this threat in the middle of summer, around mid-August. This is not the first time that the magistrate has received this type of missive. “I had already received an anonymous letter directly to my private home with death threats. It was August 29, 2022,” she recalls. The modus operandi and the very nature of this lawyer’s work leave little room for doubt. Behind the terrible words is the Sicilian mafia. Because Claudia Caramanna takes care of their children and, in the most extreme cases, extracts them from their families.
