At least six people died and six others were missing in Peru on Friday after a bus carrying around 30 passengers fell into a river, the Health Ministry announced.
“Six people died and six others are missing after a bus skidded and overturned,” the Health Directorate of the Ancash region (west) said in a statement. “According to the latest report, there are 32 injured. Regarding the missing people, the police unit in the region is searching for them,” she added.
No information was given on the causes of the accident. The vehicle, from the Conchucos Express company, broke in two while rolling down the slope, according to images posted on social networks.
The bus, which left Lima for Pomabamba (north), fell 150 meters before ending up in a river. The accident occurred in the province of Mariscal Luzuriaga, in the Ancash region, about 430 km northeast of the capital.
Road accidents are frequent in Peru, due to speeding, the poor state of road infrastructure, as well as the lack of signage and controls.
