Ukraine and Russia carried out air raids overnight from Monday to Tuesday, on New Year's Eve, with kyiv announcing it had been targeted by 61 Russian missiles and drones and Moscow having shot down 68 Ukrainian drones.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, these Russian strikes mainly targeted the Sumy oblast, bordering Russia, in the north of the country, and kyiv, the capital. Six Iskander ballistic missiles, six guided missiles, eight cruise missiles and one Kinjal missile are reported.
Forty Shahed attack drones were also launched on the country. Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses shot down the Kinjal, five guided missiles as well as sixteen drones, the Air Force reports in its daily update on Facebook.
The Russian Defense Ministry welcomed this attack on Tuesday, explaining that it had “achieved the objective of these strikes”. “This morning, Russian armed forces launched a combined attack with precision weapons and attack drones on the infrastructure of a military airfield and an enterprise in the military-industrial complex that produces gunpowder charges for the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces »she said in a press release.
On the same night, a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fuel fire in an oil depot in the Russian oblast of Smolensk, 500 kilometers as the crow flies from kyiv, according to the regional governor. The Russian defense claimed to have shot down 68 Ukrainian drones during this attack.
