The main opposition parties and civil society organizations in Guinea called for demonstrations in Conakry starting January 6 to demand the departure of the ruling junta, in a statement Wednesday.

The Forces vives de Guinée (FVG), a collective bringing together the main opposition parties and civil society organizations, “invite all Guinean citizens, civil and military, from inside and outside to mobilize with the greatest combativeness, to demand the departure of the junta and the establishment of a civil transition”, according to this press release.

“These demonstrations in the streets and in public squares will begin on January 6 in Greater Conakry and will continue later in the interior prefectures,” he adds.

The FVG also reaffirmed their desire to no longer recognize the junta from December 31, the date of the end of the so-called “transition” period.

Nearly three years after the military led by General Mamadi Doumbouya came to power, the prospect of a return to constitutional order in Guinea continues to recede.

The junta is accused of muzzling the press, of the assassination, according to the FVG, of more than 60 demonstrators and of the disappearance of two civil society leaders.

The junta has already made it known that it would renege on a commitment, initially made under international pressure, to hand over power to civilian rule by the end of 2024. It had also committed to holding a constitutional referendum before the end of the year, which has still not been held.
