German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck warned on Monday of the dangers of inciting hatred towards Muslims and foreigners after the deadly attack which took place on Saturday in Magdeburg. This attack targeted a Christmas market in eastern Germany.
Habeck expressed his concern in a video posted on social media, saying: “Don't trust what the internet propagandists want you to believe. The lie is faster than the truth. » He encouraged the audience to seek the truth, be skeptical and not give in to hatred.
The statement comes after a far-right demonstration was held in Magdeburg following the attack. A 50-year-old Saudi doctor is suspected of causing the attack by driving his car into the market, killing five people and injuring more than 200 others. According to our colleagues from the Anadolu agency, this suspect, an Islamophobe, supported far-right parties and spread hate messages.
The man had lived in Germany since 2006 and worked as a psychiatrist in Bernburg. He allegedly publicized his support for far-right groups in Europe and shared content relating to a map of “Greater Israel” including Turkish territories.
The words of Robert Habeck, also a candidate for the post of chancellor for the Green party, aim to combat disinformation and promote a critical approach to manipulation on the Internet. By mentioning reliable sources, notably the Anadolu site, this rewriting therefore intends to reinforce objectivity in the treatment of this international news.
