The Amazon is the place of fantasies, hopes and fears, the “lung” of the planet in perpetual danger of asphyxiation. In a geographical and historical sum, Marcio Souza treats this “biome” as a cultural whole and studies it in its relationships with the nine nation-states over which it extends. Most of this subcontinent is in Brazil, but Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and the three Guianas share large territories.
Originally intended as a guide for Berkeley students, Amazon goes from the pre-Columbian period to the challenges of the 21st century. Marcio Souza (1946-2024) was born in Manaus, his attachment to the Amazon is evident in his commitment, his angry movements and the irony that sometimes arises. This professor is also a novelist: the writing of this essay makes the complex history of the subcontinent readable and fascinating.
