The scene took place this Sunday, December 22 at Belfast airport in Northern Ireland. As storm Frederico rages, an ATR 72 attempts to land. But the arrival does not go quite as planned.
The pilots of a regional ATR 72 from Aer Lingus, the Irish national airline, had a big scare this Sunday, December 22. The plane, which took off from Edinburgh, had to make an emergency landing due to bad weather.
This dramatic moment was captured by an aviation enthusiast. The incredible photos broadcast on the X network (formerly Twitter) show the nose of the plane hitting the ground of the runway. The nose gear of the ATR 72 suddenly collapsed. Sparks flew as the plane skidded down the runway.
The aircraft took a nosedive after being hit by violent gusts of wind, due to bad weather conditions, due to storm Enol, which is currently raging in the northern part of Europe and causing numerous disruptions in the air traffic.
A spokesperson for Belfast City Airport said: “No passengers were on board the aircraft when the incident occurred. It was a positioning flight with only four crew members on board”. The airport's emergency procedures were immediately activated.
Flight EAG7P, operated by an ATR 72-600, finally came to rest on the runway without further incident and no crew member was injured. Belfast Airport has closed runway number 4 for the remainder of Sunday.
