The Minister in charge of Justice, Edasso Rodrigue Bayala, affirmed this Friday, December 20, 2024 that the bill providing amnesty pardon for the alleged perpetrators of the 2015 coup d'état does not call into question the spirit of the insurrection popular of 2014 driven by the Transition.
“We need people to understand that many of those who will benefit from this amnesty have already served their sentences. Therefore, there is no questioning of the regulations. This is a normal procedure provided for by law,” declared the minister.
Rodrigue Bayala spoke during a press briefing intended to clarify the amnesty pardon bill for the alleged perpetrators of the aborted putsch of September 15 and 16, 2015.
According to him, the Burkinabè people followed the trial of this coup d'état, where all parties were heard, and convictions were handed down.
“In our sector, we need first the truth, then justice, to finally lead to amnesty. It’s as if we were speaking truth, justice, reconciliation. To this day, everyone knows what happened and who did what,” he explained.
He specified that this amnesty law, provided for by the Constitution, in no way calls into question court decisions but aims to relieve prison congestion and allow defendants meeting the conditions to serve their country.
The minister also stressed that this measure will strengthen the patriotism and commitment of certain soldiers who, although having already returned to the theater of operations, see their careers blocked due to ongoing legal proceedings.
“This law, which completely erases the sentence, will allow those who meet the conditions to progress in their career,” he added, specifying however that damages will remain the responsibility of those granted amnesty.
