This Saturday evening, in the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Minister-President of the Saxony-Anhalt region Reiner Haseloff, a mass was held in Magdeburg Cathedral to pay tribute to the victims. A crowd gathered around the religious building to place flowers or light candles.
“Last night’s brutal attack makes us sad and angry”
“The brutal attack last night makes us sad and angry, disconcerted and afraid, uncertain and desperate, speechless and deeply affected. We are gathered this evening in the cathedral with incomprehensible feelings,” explained Bishop Gerhard Feige at the start of the service. “We are together tonight to offer each other support, because we do not want hatred and violence to have the last word.”
Far-right slogans are also heard in central Magdeburg. Several hundred protesters gathered in a central square in the capital of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Banners calling for “remigration” and cries of “We are the people” rang out.
